Welcome texters, chatters, twitterers, bloggers, podcasters, skypers, youtubers and everyone connecting online.

The Internet has quickly become perhaps the major channel for relating to our friends, our communities and to our world. The challenge posed in this class is whether we can continue to develop it as a learning tool, a community-building tool and a potential tool for social change. Let's find out!

Working with technology educator Jim Martinez, participants will be encouraged to collectively play with the latest gadgets (cell phones, smart phones, computers, PDAs, cameras, etc.), exploring opportunities for online collaboration and learning. How we play will be informed by the Institute's discovery that non-goal oriented, creative play can be a key component of learning and development, whether we're 5 or 85.

A computer that is less than 5 years old or a smart phone required. Access to digital cameras, digital video, or a digital microphone will contribute to a richer multimedia experience for all.

Jim Martinez, Ph.D. is an adjunct professor of the Urban Teacher Education Program at Rutgers University-Newark where he teaches a course on instructional technology. He is the co-leader of the Institute's Developing Teachers Fellowship Program, an initiative that provides public school teachers with training in a performatory approach to teaching and learning. A graduate of the New York City Teaching Fellows program, Jim has taught technology in middle and elementary classrooms. In addition, he has over 20 years of experience in the technology sector as an internet entrepreneur and a corporate technology consultant. Jim is currently working on his first book, A Performatory Approach to Teaching, Learning and Technology. He received his M.A. in Education from Lehman College, City University of New York and his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center.
